A 66-year-old woman was found murdered and robbed of her two gold chains at Thiruppoondi on Sunday.
Ahmedu Nachiyar, wife of Abdul Rahim, resided alone in an upper-floor apartment on Ayyanar Kovil Street. Unidentified intruders entered the premises and found the elderly woman asleep in the portico. They attempted to snatch the two gold chains weighing around five sovereigns from her neck.
When the woman cried out, they strangled her to death and fled from the scene with the stolen jewellery. The imitation bangles on her wrist were left untouched, police said.
Alerted by local residents, Keezhaiyur police rushed to the spot and recovered the body, which was later sent to Orathur Government Medical College Hospital for post-mortem. A detailed investigation is on.
