The Tamil Nadu unit of BJP on Sunday staged a protest at Uthamachozhapuram near Thirumarugal in Nagapattinam district against the State government’s decision to construct a ₹49.5-crore regulator across the Vettar river to stop sea water intrusion into villages.
A section of farmers participated in the protest that was led by BJP district president Gajendran.
State president Nainar Nagenthran, who participated in the event, said the regulator, originally proposed for Boothangudi to safeguard agricultural lands from flooding and saltwater intrusion, was shifted to Uthamachozhapuram to benefit political interests aligned with the ruling DMK. “The decision is not rooted in public welfare or scientific planning — it is a political favour.”
He also criticised the DMK government’s record on agricultural policy and resource allocation, alleging that central funds intended for irrigation development were being underutilised or misdirected.
